Nuclear Truth Or Global Disaster?

With the disaster in Japan recently rocking both the people and the government, a debate has been kick-started into life concerning the safety of nuclear power. It’s tragic that we should need a disaster of this magnitude to remind us that nuclear power can be dangerous, and it’s even worse when the scientists reporting at the scene are clearly doing their best to re-invent the facts of the matter. This is no surprise, of course: Japan has always been a closely guarded country, and this disaster is nothing less than a country-sized embarrassment. So it begs the question: what is really happening in the reactors? And is an even bigger tragedy on the cards?
All we know is this: the Japanese government have raised the risk level today, bringing it in line with other recent disasters. This proves one thing very obviously: they can’t hide the facts anymore. Something may or may not happen, and clearly we are running out of time to make things better.
This should not come as any surprise, of course. Ever since nuclear power was invented, the issues relating to problems have been closely guarded, shrouded in mystery, even. And this is worrying when it comes to the Japanese reactors currently in turmoil: if something is about to happen, they know about it and don’t want anyone else to know until they absolutely have to.
Japan may be technologically advanced, which industry covering everything from global roaming service to IT and cosmetics, but sadly it is still trying to bury its head in the sand and tell us there are no problems. That’s understandable at a time like this, but it doesn’t make it any easier to bear when you are one of the many people who might possibly be affected.
