Wind Turbines: What’s Your Opinion?

Whether you love the idea of millions of wind turbines covering the face of the earth, or hate it because it’ll ruin your view and you really couldn’t give a monkey’s about the Ozone layer anyway, everyone has an opinion on energy production and how best to go about it. My personal opinion? Wind turbines don’t cut it. At least not right now. Why? Several reasons, one of them being that by their very nature they are not efficient or cost effective enough.
But please, don’t get me wrong. I think wind turbines are really great, as vital as horse insurance for a Shetland with a penchant for kicking people and getting its owner sued, and probably a really good long-term answer to all our energy woes. My problem with them, however, lies in the number of wind turbines that we would need to have in existence to solve the problems that nuclear power so easily does (when it’s not exploding reactors or melting down and destroying millions of years'worth of marine life, that is…). According to facts I have pricked up off the internet – which we must take with a pinch of virtual salt – we’d all need to have wind turbines on our heads and arms and legs for every minute of every day, and walking through the town on a Saturday would be even worse, what with the place being rammed with wind-turbines also doubling as hot-dog stands. In other words, it’s just not feasible, so before you start moaning about nuclear power, have a think: what is the next reasonable step?
