Does spelling and grammar matter?

Someone recently asked me this question in all seriousness. At first I thought they were being deadly serious, and the rage started to build inside me, and then I quickly understood what was going on: they were winding me up. This was, as I should have known, one of my friend’s funny jokes.

Haha.

Except to me, it’s not a joke. I know I might sound a bit serious and like the kind of person you wouldn’t want to be stuck next to at a dinner party, but it’s true! Grammar and spelling matters. The only problem, then, is that it certainly doesn’t matter to everyone as much as it does me…

To my mind, you can spell running clothes like that, the proper way, or you can spell it runing cloths. We all know what the second version really means, but does that mean we shouldn’t bother to spell it out right to begin with? Come on, let’s face it, it’s not difficult. Anyone with a computer has spell-check, so there really is no excuse.

Digital publishing is to blame, of course; since that reared its ugly head people have been spelling in all kinds of awful ways. Well, it doesn’t matter what anyone else says, I will always want proper spelling the old-fashioned way. What’s right is right, and we need to do everything we can to protect it, so join me!

If you don’t want to join me, that’s fine, I suppose. Just pray and hope that you don’t get stuck next to me at a dinner party and we start talking about grammar and punctuation, because it will not be a pretty sight when I open my big fat mouth.
